blah

Two mornings in a row, I have returned from dogwalks to Nob Hill Park to phone in crack dealers/users to the police. Today, there were like 10 people there watching everyone(well, actually "everyone" being just me and the dog) who came and went. They had a little system down today, someone on every corner of the park watching and some folks stationed up at the top of the hill for sentries while some guy was dealing down the side where you can't be seen...ARGH!!!! I don't understand how nobody else calls these things in. How do people just live within their homes and not do anything about what is happening outside of their homes? I don't get it. I think I am going back to bed for a while...some days I just don't think I can take anymore.

***Update****
It's 12:30 now...the park is still inundated. The police did come earlier...but the dealers didn't leave. So now the police are gone and the dealers aren't. ARGH !!! Again.

The police came but the dealers didn't leave...says it all really. Wanna borrow my imaginary flamethrower? I haven't used it once since leaving my job.

Sounds very much like the system up at the 'projects' in the series "The Wire" on HBO (season 1)... watchers on every corner and money and drugs never change the same sellers hands. Very sneaky.

Geez, your cat should teach us all how to live...

(I'd call it in too. Then go back to bed.)

Alas...I wouldn't think any of these folks could afford cable to learn the ropes! Dangit! Must have watched that in jail!
Tod, there's only so much they can do unless they SEE something. Maybe a live link from someone's computer at the park to the police station?
Heidi....I actually didn't go back to bed. I cleaned the whole house and then went dog walking and then cleaned some more....

Didn't they extend the red zone? Am I missing something here? Park not included?

Good for you for just getting on with it and going about your daily life. I know how hard that can be when something else can be so consuming.

Fishbone sure looks comfy. Not bothered by much, huh?

We Islanders should get together and go for a nice spring walk. Hopefully the weather will co-operate. We could all take pictures - well me with my pathetic point and click, or worse (but more often) my camera phone, ha ha. Just a thought to brighten us up!

But if they wait till they see something they'll never do anything. I am pretty sure they can spot this sort of activity and even recognise some of the people as users/dealers, after all, you can. They should be adopting a zero tolerance approach and target the areas. It's too easy to just cruise around in cars all day. just my opinion.

Hard to believe that Nanaimo's getting as bad as Victoria with respect to druggies.

At least our cops have their priorities - they're after the environmental protesters at the future Bear Mountain interchange.

Society is just so wrong.

It appears that only the yuppies have the power to drive drug dealers and indigents out of a neighborhood.

Ya...what happened to the so called RED ZONE? Has it turned pale pink already?

Hmmmm, however, you might have something here. Why not convince the RCMP to set up webcams in the area? Maybe you can get proactive for a change and get some real evidence to remove these creeps from your area. They have webcams all over London to help augment their scarce police force and it seems to work well in providing evidence for court proceedings.

Addendum: from Islander
Hey dilling, I found this at another blogsite (Nanaimoinformation.com) posted by an ex mountie named Skidmark. His advice to a former resident of the Victoria Street area expressing similar frustration was:

"All complainants are supposed to be advised of the action that was taken on their complaint. This is supposedly so important that there is a check box to signify that it was done on the reporting form and the supervisor was not supposed to conclude the file until this had been accomplished.

So, if you are not hearing back, you should follow up, preferably by providing the file number. I would ask for the file number after I had made my complaint in order to do this.

If it is not satisfactory to you, then you should work your way up from the investigator's supervisor to the head of the detachment to the officer commanding for the province to the RCMP Public Complaints Commission.

You are the taxpayer, in effect the employer for the police, and as such can expect service at a level appropriate to your complaint and within the abilities of the police service to provide.

I'm curious about the pictures you said you took of drug dealers. What did you do with them?

Hopefully action was taken, you just didn't see it. If not, you have every reason to complain."

I didn't take photos yesterday...I was outnumbered and out by myself! And quite honestly, the were threatening in behaviour. One followed me from the park. I have posted photos over the years of deals and such on this blog, and have a folder of photos on the computer. I have offered them at one time or another to RCMP, as well as lists of plate numbers of dealers, johns, etc. No one has taken me up them yet...mostly I keep them for when the city wants to raise my property taxes and I want to protest it...
some of the officers do call back. my friend lives on the park so she was telling me they were there...and then when they moved the wrong people along(NOT the dealers), she called them to come back. I actually think it was the Footprints people(downtown security) but I don't know for sure who moved them along AND made them pick up their garbage...Thank you very much.

More from Islander
Skidmark did say the pictures have to be clear enough to demonstrate the illegal behavior and identify the perp (face). This could be difficult to get without a steady hand, great timing and a strong telephoto lens. Be careful! We don't want to read about a good citizen getting beat up by drug dealers, do we!

Maybe the police had to go get some money as they hadn't brought enough to score?

There was a guy in the states that had cameras on all sides of his house to catch the dealer/hooker/johns etc going to his neighbours homes. One conviction for all the years of watching, reporting, calling, harassment and threats... I'll see if I can find it again. The camera's themselves were not available for public to watch, but were connected to his home and the police station and all recorded.

The park is in the red zone, isn't it? I thought it was part of it?

I call whenever I see anyone up there that doesn't belong. But there are enough houses right around that park.
You'd think someone would have been home to notice?

Whatever. I just wish we could gather up all the druggies, dealers, etc and take them out to the shooting range. *evil grin*
