Wow, so true...I'm lost for words. Just returned home after 4 glorious days on Salt Spring Island. I had to keep asking myself while wondering around town, "What makes this place so different"? Sure it has a town centre of shops, with even a Thrifys & Home Hardware (both small stores), both most shops where owned locally, a lot of galleries and one of a kind stuff, but none of the usual strip mall fare. No Subways, no KFC, no MD's, no Gap or Mariposa. There were some more interesting coffee and clothing shops, etc.

Also as you drive around you notice that there is virtually no mega housing developments with every house looking the same, such as our North Nanaimo. Not all houses were in top condition, but they all offered some charm & character whether in an interesting fence, home business, etc.

We kept saying "Nanaimo harbour is beautiful - as it is on Salt Spring. What happened? I guess it is a strong voice of the people who live there as to how they want their surrounding influencing their lives. Interestingly enough, I did not come across one "Cracker" or Tweeker", and people in general seemed to be very diligent in picking up after themselves and errant tourists.

I guess it is because a high influx of people bent on making Nanaimo the new Surrey. Cookie-cutter big-box houses, big-box stores, neighbourhood rules regarding what you can and can't do on your own property!

Me? I just couldn't live in such a box with the required 3 shrubbery in the front yard.

I spent the trip home adding up in my mind about selling the home and business and moving there. But no...I'm gonna stay here and shake my head a while and wonder how some absolute land and building jewels can be stucoed over in the name of developement. Rant over.

It's like you're living in a war zone. Is it getting worse? Or has it stayed consistantly bad? I wonder if the residential neighbourhoods are suffering because of the "red zones" which pushes the street people away from the city centre.

I live across the street from a "red zone". I can tell you that no one is pushing anyone out of there. OH....wait! That's not true! The crackheads are pushing the residents and children out.
