I guess no one else could read that part about no cameras, though. So I shouldn't have worried. I could have taken in just about anything. No security check. No ushers in a darkened arena. I could not even read the row and seat numbers at all. Weird. Like no other place I have ever really been to a concert. Anyhoo, cameras were flashing all over the place and I found it annoying...hey, you folks, you do know that your flash is really only good up to eight feet or so, right? Duh. If you want to photograph, turn off the flash!!!!
And? When Willie sings "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" and "Always on my Mind?" If you don't have a lighter to pull out, DO NOT use the light on your cel phone. Totally innapropriate. Really. Lame.
We missed the first opening act, but the second was three gals from Newfoundland, Labrador, called the Sheas. They were lovely. I liked them very much...beautiful voices.
Willie opened with "Whiskey River," just as every Willie Nelson concert does. He was GREAT, although I am not sure the Victoria crowd was completely with him. I think they all wanted to hear him sing the standard Willie Nelson hits in just the way they have heard them on their CDs. Or maybe they were all up past their bedtimes. Well, hell's bells, folks. That just isn't what Willie Nelson is all about.
The crowd was so freaking sedate that it was creeping me out a bit. I have never been to a Willie Nelson show where everyone stayed in their seats and politely applauded at the end of each song. We jump up and hoot and holler when he's belting out "Me and Bobbie McGee." We all join in on "On the Road Again." We cry and laugh and sing and WOOT WOOT WOOT...but I guess I am not in Texas anymore. Or the Gorge. Or Tacoma, for that matter. Or Seattle....it's not just a U.S. thing, is it?
Willie is not set in his sound. Every time I hear him sing "Whiskey River", it sounds different. Every time he sings "Crazy," it is different. Every time he sings "Me and Paul"(my dad's very favorite), it is different. That's one of the things I love about him...I think it's one of the things this crowd didn't get about him.
And he sang all of those standards, and many, many more. He sang new stuff of his I hadn't heard before...he sang with his kid on a song they collaborated on. Great song, by the way, but it was funny how hard his son, about 20 years old or less, was wanking on his electric guitar and Willie comes up with half the notes on old and trusty Trigger and sounded so much better. Sorry, kid, you got a ways to go...but great songwriting. I hope that song is on the next album.
He has been singing to me my whole life...not just the same songs, new songs...old songs made new. Seeing him live is like coming in to cheer a dear, treasured friend. I love you, Willie. Thank you for the music.

Oh maaaaan!! Awesome!
Have I ever admitted that my Willie appreciation is way too low and I must rectify that situation? My dad, unlike yours, wasn't a fan. I'm catching up now.
I always liked his braids. We matched.
I'm so glad you got to that show. And did you know he's one of the only guys anymore with his own tour bus? Most are leased. And he runs his on bio-diesel.
Also you're so cute and I love your T shirt.
that's my Farm Aid 2004 shirt!
glad you had a good time and mr milo is looking forward to seeing emma's meme!
Dilling, I have droped by from Her Indoors, and I am glad I did. I will be adding you to my daily read. As for the Willie Nelson Burgers, well, knowing Willie, did you have a light buz during the concert - have the muchies or crave a beer?
By the way, I am also a libra born under the sign of the monkey. Could we be twins several years removed?
Oh maaaaan! You went to Farm Aid too?
You are SO COOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( I already knew it but this just ultra confirms it!)
Spoken like a true music lover. So did you have to behave like the rest of the audience, or did you get to raise a ruckus? It always seemed to me that the rise of the crowd produced an equal reaction from the performer. Some of the best large venue shows I have seen have been while I was standing up. Wonder if it is a U.S. thing...
[If you don't have a lighter to pull out, DO NOT use the light on your cel phone.] LMAO!
I'm glad you had a great time. I will get round to checking Willie out one of these days ;)
I am not a huge Willie fan, but I'm glad that you had such a great time! Anyone that has a bio diesel tour bus is ok in my book!
my burger left me feeling "satisfied", coffeypot...and living in BC, we'll just leave it at that...
gawilli, I was in between the two extremes...I was so honestly disconcerted by the polite crowd that I didn't know what to do, although the lady sitting nest to me was entirely upset by my vocal outbursts..I was scared to stand cuz I though she might call security to bounce me if I stood up.
Tod~um, yeah? is it the same AT ALL?
I know not everyone is as big a Willie Nelson fan(Biddie and Heidi) as me...but everybody has SOMEBODY who sings that way for them...even if it is "simply" their significant other in the shower... second place for me, for example, is Michael, who takes the time and effort to learn to play on the guitar my current most favorites...sigh. If only OUR bus ran on Bio-diesel, eh?
You've outdone yourself...this is one amazing Willie Nelson post and I just had to read it over and over. I LOVE him almost as much as Mr. Depp and that's saying something for sure!
I enjoyed your review and stories, thanks. I can never understand folks who can sit through his shows, either. They should stay home and watch the DVD. When Willie's on stage, I have to be dancing.

OK, I just had to remove my own comment because apparently I'm making NO SENSE!!!!!!!
Sigh.
I met my ex at Sopranos and he and I went to that Farm Aid together! : )
Victoria....it's a small world, after all. Despite the ex, you have to admit, Farm Aid was an excellent show! Dave Matthews was HIGH-larious.
